Whitsand Bay
Located in South East Cornwall (sometimes referred to as ‘Cornwall’s Forgotten Corner’), Whitsand Bay stretches from Portwrinkle in the West to. Rame Head in the East, and the glorious beaches along here are considered by many to be some of Cornwall’s hidden gems.
Characterised by rugged cliffs, dramatic scenery and long stretches of beautiful sandy beaches, Whitsand Bay has become a favourite destination for generations of holidaymakers, and home to lucky adventurers seeking a coastal lifestyle.
The South West Coast Path made popular by walkers, writers and film makers runs the length of Whitsand Bay. The sun rises over Rame can be incredibly stunning, similarly the sunsets over Portwrinkle are often just as spectacular.
Steeped in history, there is evidence all around of times past, which have shaped the area.
Several of the beaches can be accessed by steep paths and steps which wind down the cliffside. At low tide the long stretches of glistening sands provide great walking, and the stunning views along the beaches are enough to take your breath away.
When the tide recedes, rock pools are common along the beach and these provide fascinating insights into this diverse area’s marine life, making this a great spot for youngsters to have fun and learn.
Compared to other parts of Cornwall, Whitsand Bay benefits from manageable numbers of visitors in the summer (due to narrow lanes, limited parking and accommodation). There’s also a healthy mix of permanent residents, second homes and holiday homes, with the locals living in thriving communities around the bay.
